The island's second port, with its boatyard and pine grove
Skala Prinou sits on the northwest coast of Thasos, about fifteen kilometres from Limenas, and is the island's second port after the capital, with a regular ferry link to Kavala on the mainland opposite. The word 'Skala' means the harbour, the seafront landing of the inland mountain village of Prinos that spreads higher up.
To the left of the harbour still works one of the last traditional boatyards in Greece, where fishing boats and caïques are hauled onto land for maintenance. At the edge of the bay the Dasyllio, a small pine grove, holds recreation areas and a playground. It is also said that an old military airfield once stood in the wider Prinos area, used by the Allies during the First World War.
The shore is pebbly, with pines that lend natural shade close to the water. It is not organised, but the settlement front has tavernas, cafés and parking, and the port lies right beside it. Access is by paved road down to the village.
