Frequently asked questions

How reliable is the CalmBeach forecast?
Wind, waves and temperature are a live weather forecast, not an on-the-spot measurement. It shows what is likely, so it is more accurate closer to the day than a week ahead. We present it as honestly as we can — for example a wave-height range instead of a false single number — and you should always double-check with your own eyes when you arrive.
What does wind exposure mean and how do you find less exposed beaches?
For each beach we look at shoreline orientation and surrounding terrain to estimate whether wind is likely to blow onshore or whether nearby land may reduce exposure. This helps compare beaches that may feel more manageable with beaches that are likely to pick up chop.
How do you work out the wave height, and what does the graphic show?
We combine the marine forecast with a physical model of how much wave the wind can build at each beach, based on how much open water lies in front of it. The graphic shows a real-scale person (about 1.75 m) and how high the water reaches them, so you grasp the wave size at a glance. The stated height is the average of the bigger waves — occasional sets run higher.
Is CalmBeach free?
Yes, CalmBeach is completely free to use.
How often is the data updated?
The weather and sea forecast is live and refreshes several times a day. Beach details such as location, facilities and access are updated periodically.
Where does the data come from?
Weather and sea conditions come from the Open-Meteo forecast service. Beach details come from open data (OpenStreetMap) plus our own curation and checks. Accessible sea-access (Seatrac) points come from the official seatrac.gr directory.
How many beaches does CalmBeach cover?
CalmBeach covers over 2,500 beaches across Greece, and we keep adding and refining them.
Can I rely on it for swimming safety?
It gives a good sense of how calm or rough the sea will be, but it does not replace your own judgement or a lifeguard. Always watch the waves, currents and local signs — even small waves can create dangerous rip currents.

Recommendations are indicative and depend on available weather and beach data. Conditions may vary locally.
