How we measure wind shelter at each beach

Most weather sites give you one wind figure for a whole island. That figure is often right and still useless: on the same afternoon, one bay is flat and the bay behind the headland is unswimmable. CalmBeach exists to answer the harder question — what the wind does at THIS beach — so this page explains how that answer is built, and where we stop trusting it.

The question a forecast alone cannot answer

A marine forecast is calculated on a grid of cells several kilometres across. One cell can cover an entire small island, so it cannot see that a cove faces away from the wind while the coast opposite takes it head-on. That is not a flaw in the forecast — it is a limit of its resolution. Every beach we describe sits inside such a cell, so the forecast is where our work starts, not where it ends.

What we measure for every single beach

For each of the beaches in our dataset we work out, direction by direction, how much open water lies in front of the shore and how much land stands behind it. A beach with a long stretch of open sea to the north will build waves when the wind comes from the north; the same beach can be completely calm in a southerly. This is geometry, computed from coastline data rather than typed in by hand, and it is why two beaches ten minutes apart can get different readings on the same day.

Where the numbers come from

Live wind, wave and temperature forecasts come from Open-Meteo. Coastline shapes and much of the beach information come from OpenStreetMap and its contributors. On top of both sits our own curation: corrected pin positions, verified amenities, and per-beach overrides where the automatic reading was wrong. Sources and licences are credited on every page.

We test it, and we test it in the direction that can hurt you

A model like this can fail in two directions: it can call a beach rougher than it is, which costs you a good afternoon, or it can call it calmer than it is, which is the one that matters. We run the model against thousands of real beach-hours of live data before we change anything, and our automatic checks are written to catch both directions before a change reaches the site. When a check and a nice-looking idea disagree, the check wins.

What we deliberately do not claim

We do not promise calm water, and we do not tell you a beach is safe — no forecast can. Very light winds, sudden gusts falling off steep terrain, and conditions inside very small enclosed coves are all cases where we stay cautious on purpose and say less rather than more. Our wording follows that: "usually sheltered" is a seasonal tendency, not a statement about this afternoon.

What to do with all this

Use the shelter reading to choose which side of the island to drive to, and the live conditions to choose the day and the hour. Then use your eyes when you arrive: local flags, the lifeguard, and how the water actually looks always outrank anything a website told you.

Frequently asked questions

Why does CalmBeach sometimes disagree with a general weather app?
A general app usually reports the wind for a region or a nearby town. We start from the same forecast and then account for the shape of the coastline at the specific beach, so a beach in the wind shadow of the land can read differently from the island average. The two are not measuring the same thing.
Is the shelter reading about today or about the season?
Both, separately. The wording "usually sheltered when the meltemi blows" describes how a beach tends to behave in the region's dominant summer wind, which is useful weeks ahead. Today's colour and conditions come from the live forecast and change through the day.
Do you visit the beaches?
Some of them, and those carry a visited-and-verified mark. The rest are built from open data plus our own corrections. We would rather tell you a beach is unverified than imply a personal visit that never happened.
Can I trust this for swimming safety?
No website can carry that. Treat everything here as planning information: it helps you pick a likely-comfortable beach and a likely-comfortable hour. Warning flags, lifeguards, local signage and your own judgement at the water's edge come first.
