The beach below the old mines
Metalia is a beach of fine sand and pebbles on the southwest coast of Thasos, directly in front of the old mining installations of Limenaria. Its name means literally 'the mines', after the ore works that shaped this stretch of coast.
Above the shore stands the 'Palataki', the two-towered building raised in 1903 to house the administration of the German mining company Speidel. In the early twentieth century zinc, lead and silver-bearing ores were extracted here, until the activity faded around the middle of the century. The listed complex now hosts cultural events from time to time.
The beach is seasonally organised, with a beach bar, sunbeds, umbrellas, toilets and showers, while parking lies a little way off. It is reached easily from Limenaria, by road or by a short path down from the Palataki, and the seabed has some rocky patches.

The bay at Metallia opens to the south-west, so it usually has natural cover from northerly, north-easterly and north-westerly winds. Orientation only reflects which way the coast faces, not confirmed shelter, so check wind and waves in the app before you go.
Metallia has sand and pebbles underfoot with shallow, gently shelving water — handy for families with young children.
