'Aphrodite's Tear' carved into the rock
Giola is a natural rock pool on the southeastern coast of Thasos, near the settlement of Astris, carved into the seaside cliffs above the open Aegean. It is a basin some twenty metres long, ringed by high rock walls, shaped by the erosion of the sea over thousands of years.
Tradition calls it 'Aphrodite's Tear'. According to the myth, it is said that Zeus created the basin as a bathing place for Aphrodite, while another version imagines Giola as an eye through which he gazed upon his beloved. Its smooth walls and floor have made it, over the years, a favourite spot for diving from the rocks.
It is unorganized, reached by a short path that begins at the dirt-road parking (off the Limenas to Astris road) and descends to the rocks. A taverna is reported nearby, a little above the cove.
