The shore of white marble
Saliara, known internationally as Marble Beach, lies on the northern coast of Thasos, between Makryammos and Vathy, a few kilometres from Limenas. Its shore is paved with white, rounded marble pebbles, which earned it its 'marble beach' nickname.
The pebbles are, in essence, small pieces of Thasos marble, polished by the waves over the centuries. The island has an age-old history of marble quarrying, with ancient quarries that supplied Greek and Roman monuments, and Saliara is a natural imprint of that heritage upon the coastline.
It is organized seasonally, with a beach bar, sunbeds and umbrellas in the summer months and parking nearby. Access is by a dirt road that branches off toward Makryammos.
