Skala Kallirachis stretches along the western coast of Thasos, looking out over the open sea, the mountains of Kavala and, in the distance, Mount Athos. It is the seafront landing of the mountain village of Kallirachi, set higher up the slope.
The settlement grew from fishermen who built small huts near the water's edge, where they could keep their boats and tackle, and little by little those huts became permanent homes strung along the shore. The name Kallirachi, tradition holds, is the prettier version of an older 'Kaki Rachi' (bad ridge): around 1740 the residents abandoned the fortified village higher up, came down to a lower elevation and gave their new village the more pleasing name. Every summer the little harbour comes alive with cultural events, peaking in the sardine festival in mid-August.
The beach has both fine and coarse sand and has no permanent organisation. The settlement offers tavernas, cafés and parking, and access is by paved road through the village.
