The cove below the Monastery of the Archangel
Livadi is a beach of coarse sand, pebbles and rock on the southeast coast of Thasos, in a picturesque cove below the Monastery of the Archangel Michael. The setting is wild, with high mountains dropping to the sea.
The Holy Monastery of the Archangel Michael, a dependency of the Philotheou Monastery on Mount Athos, stands on the cliffs above the bay. Tradition holds that it keeps a fragment of the Holy Nail, one of the nails of the Crucifixion, tied to a custom in the days after Easter that sets out from Theologos. Beside Livadi lies the small cove of Arsanas.
The beach is organised, with toilets, showers, a place for food and drink, sunbeds, umbrellas and trees for shade. Access is by dirt road, the final stretch of some four hundred metres unpaved, with parking behind the shore.
