The cove named for its starlit sky
Astris, also called Astrida, lies on southern Thasos, in an area with a long farming and fishing tradition. Tradition holds that the name came from the clear, star-filled sky the workers watched as they came down before dawn from neighbouring Theologos for the olive harvest.
The area is of archaeological interest: excavations have brought to light defensive towers and stone vats (linoi) for wine, while local place-names attest that in antiquity these slopes were covered in vineyards. Across from the cove lies a small islet, Astronisi, which tradition identifies with the island of the Sirens, the point where Odysseus is said to have passed on his way home from Troy.
The shore has both fine and coarse sand and has no permanent organisation. Tavernas and parking are nearby, and access is by paved road in the Astrida area.
