The monastery's old boatyard
Arsanas is a small beach of sand, pebbles and rock at the southeastern tip of Thasos, beside Livadi and below the monastery of Archangel Michael. Its name, it is said, comes from "tarsanas", meaning a small boatyard, since the cove once served as the monastery's shipyard.
The monastery of Archangel Michael, perched high on the cliffs above the sea, is the most important monastery on Thasos and a dependency of the Philotheou Monastery on Mount Athos. Into the little cove of Arsanas, it is said, flow two freshwater springs.
It is organized, with a taverna, sunbeds, showers and WC. Access is difficult: a dirt road in the Livadi area, parking, and a final downhill path to the shore, while access by boat is also reported.
