Kymi's 'Spinalonga'
Soutsini lies just north of the port of Kymi on the eastern coast of Evia, a small cove of coarse sand and pebbles beneath pine-covered slopes. According to local tradition, its name comes from the phrase 'sout, tsinoi', said of the lepers who once lived in isolation in the area.
That story earned the beach the nickname 'Spinalonga of Evia': it is reported that in the 19th century, with a quarantine station operating at Kymi's harbour, patients were confined to the Soutsini area, hidden in the dense vegetation. The shore remained hard to reach until the 1980s, when a road was opened linking it to the harbour. White rocks emerge from the slopes, and the pines of Kymi's mountainside come down close to the sand.
These days it functions as a free beach without full organization, with a beach bar on the shore and cafes and village services a short distance away. Access is by a paved road reaching close to the beach, with parking available.
