The long beach-bar strand outside Chalkida
Alykes lies on the shore of the North Evian Gulf near Drosia, a few kilometres northwest of Chalkida on Evia. It is a long beach of roughly one kilometre, one of the best-known quick escapes for Chalkida locals, barely an hour from Athens. You may also hear it called Ippokampos, a name said to come from the first beach bar that opened here.
The beach became widely known from the late 1980s, when its first beach bar opened, and has since grown into one of the liveliest summer hangouts in the area, with a row of bars along the sand. Summer weekends are reported to bring beach-volley tournaments, parties and concerts, and the beach has been awarded a Blue Flag.
It is organized, with seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas, beach bars, cafes and tavernas close by, seasonal showers and WC, and parking nearby. The shore is coarse sand and pebble, the water is shallow, and a paved road reaches almost to the beach.
