The sand spit facing the Petalioi
Megali Ammos stretches about 2.5 kilometres south of Marmari, on the southwestern coast of Evia, directly opposite the Petalioi islets. Its name describes exactly what it is: a long strip of fine sand, also referred to as Chrysi Ammos.
Its most distinctive feature is the tongue of sand reaching into the sea, with a length reported at around 250 metres: its shape changes from year to year as waves and sea currents gradually shift the sand. Facing west, with a view of the Petalioi cluster, the beach also offers sunsets over the islets.
It is a free beach with no organization and no natural shade, so an umbrella and water are essential. Access is by a dirt road that reaches close to the shore, with limited parking, and the ground combines fine sand with pebbles.
