The remote shore below Mount Ochi
Giannitsi lies on the eastern side of southern Evia, north of the village of the same name in the Karystos region, open to the Aegean. The village is said to have once been called Ioanniko, after a monk who lived as a hermit in the area, and from this comes the name it keeps to this day.
The wider area spreads across the foothills of Mount Ochi, with the village perched higher up at an altitude of around 240 metres, between Marmari and Karystos. On a cape about two kilometres northeast of the village, the ruins of the castle of Fylagra are said to survive, a fortress that once watched over the open Aegean and the Kafireas strait.
The beach, with coarse sand, pebbles and shallow water, remains unorganized. A canteen on the shore covers the basics, while tavernas can be found in Giannitsi village, about five minutes away.
