The cove at the mouth of the Dirfys gorge
Vythouri lies on the eastern coast of central Evia, where the gorge of the same name on Mount Dirfys meets the Aegean. It is a small, remote cove of fine pebbles enclosed by high cliffs, regarded as one of the most striking beaches of central Evia.
The Vythouri gorge is described as the wildest of the ravines furrowing the northern face of eastern Dirfys: two streams around the Glyfada plateau, the larger descending from the summit of Dirfys, join and carve through the limestone, between rock walls exceeding two hundred metres, before spilling into the sea. Once nearly inaccessible, the ravine now has road access, and hiking guides note a rich endemic flora and birds of prey, most notably the eagle owl.
The beach remains entirely unorganized, with no facilities or shops nearby, and natural shade from the rocks for part of the day. The approach is by a rough dirt road that calls for particular care, as its condition changes from year to year.
