The resort at the foot of the gorge

About 1.3 km of fine golden sand shelving gently into the bay, backed by mountains and facing the Libyan Sea, ~21 km south of Rethymno. The name (plakias, "flat") refers to the level ground formed by the Kotsifou gorge’s alluvial deposits.

It is a developed resort village — hotels, tavernas, dive centres — and a base for nearby beaches (Souda, Damnoni) and the gorge. Because of its open southern aspect, it can be windy.

About this beach

Plakias usually stays sheltered when the meltemi blows. That comes from the measured shape of the coastline around it and our curated wind records — a seasonal picture, not a live forecast, so check live wind and waves before you go.

Plakias is oriented towards the south-west, so it usually has natural cover from northerly, north-easterly and north-westerly winds.

Plakias has sand underfoot with shallow, gently shelving water — handy for families with young children.

For amenities, Plakias has an organised beach, a beach bar, sunbeds, parking nearby and food nearby. It has a Seatrac assisted-access unit for accessibility — confirm it is in service before travelling. There is a campsite nearby (Camping Apollonia, ~593 m).
