The cove of the sea caves
Spilies, also known as Kitrenosis, lies on the north coast of Rethymno in Crete, in the remote area of Latzimas, just before Geropotamos. It forms at the head of a small pebble cove beneath high, sheer cliffs.
Its name comes from the large hollows that open in the rocks along the shore. Behind the ends of the cove are caves with unusual formations, where the endangered Mediterranean monk seal finds refuge, while peregrine falcons nest on the surrounding crags. The neighbouring coast toward Geropotamos is likewise riddled with sea caves.
The shore is largely undeveloped, with natural shade from the rocks. There is a taverna and a parking area, and access is from the old national road by a short descent to the cove.
