Where the river of palms meets the sea
Souda is the westernmost beach of the long Plakias shorefront, on the south coast of Rethymno in Crete. It forms at the mouth of a narrow, deep-green valley, where the Finikas river reaches the sea.
The river takes its name from the Cretan date palms (Phoenix theophrasti) that stand out among its dense greenery, a rare species found in only a handful of places around the Mediterranean. The name Souda itself is traced to the Latin word suda, meaning a narrow passage, exactly like the riverbed that ends here.
It is an organized beach with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, a lifeguard, a cafe and tavernas, watersports, and natural shade from palms and tamarisks in places. The ground is fine sand with small pebbles, and access is by a surfaced road from Plakias.
