The harbour from which, the myth says, Icarus flew
The beach belongs to a seaside settlement and small harbour on the south coast of Crete, in the Agios Vasileios municipality of Rethymno, where the Messara plain drops down to the Libyan Sea. Tradition ties the settlement's name to a vow made by the Byzantine empress Eudokia, who is said to have met a storm off this coast during her exile and promised to build a chapel to the Virgin if she came through it.
The settlement sits on the ruins of ancient Soulia, a town of Minoan and Hellenistic Crete that is said to have held a temple of the goddess Artemis and flourished into the early Christian centuries. Local tradition places the myth of Daedalus and Icarus here too: the pair are said to have hidden in a cave on this shore before attempting their flight to freedom on wax-and-feather wings.
The beach has Seatrac accessibility infrastructure, with a ramp and walkway to the water, an accessible toilet, a changing room and a shower. The exact means of reaching the shore is not confirmed in our data.
