The palm grove at the river mouth
On the south (Libyan) coast, where the Megalopotamos river leaves its gorge, a palm forest and a freshwater stream form a channel you can swim up. The grove (Theophrastus palm) is the second-largest in Crete after Vai.
It is named after Preveli Monastery above the gorge, which during the Battle of Crete (1941) helped Allied soldiers escape by submarine from this beach. Reach it by a steep staircase or by boat from Plakias; a wild feel.
