The long sands of the old bishopric
Episkopi beach stretches along the north coast of Rethymno, Crete, about 14 kilometres west of the town, in a fertile plain that runs down to the sea. It takes its name from the namesake village a little inland, which is recorded as the seat of a bishopric in Byzantine times, hence the name. It is one of the largest sandy beaches in the area, a front of fine sand roughly three and a half kilometres long.
Two streams mark its ends: the Mouselas river to the west and the stream of the Petres gorge to the east, where the shore continues towards Petres beach. The old episcopal church of Agios Nikolaos no longer survives, but the name has stayed with the village and the coast. Loggerhead sea turtles are reported to nest in its sand from late spring into autumn, so the marked nests call for care.
The beach is organized in sections, with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, changing rooms, a lifeguard and water sports, while cafes, snack bars and restaurants operate around it. Access is easy from the Rethymno-Chania northern road, with parking and a bus connection.
