Beneath the three rocks
Mikri Triopetra, also known as Koumado, lies on the south coast of Rethymno, Crete, below the village of Akoumia, just south of the three huge rocks that gave Triopetra its name. It is a cove of coarse sand and pebble, the first of the area's two bays, within the long shoreline locals call Akoumiani Gialia.
The area once served as winter quarters for the people of Akoumia, who built small cottages near their olive groves, and much of the land remains in local hands to the present day. At the southern end of the bay the Akoumianos river reaches the sea, separating Mikri Triopetra from the Agios Pavlos dunes, and there sits the small harbour of Stomio, whose name is said to come from the "mouth" of the river outlet.
The beach is natural and unorganized, without facilities. Access is by a short passable dirt track that reaches almost to the cove.
