The mouth of the sacred river
Geropotamos lies on the north coast of Rethymno, Crete, about 18 kilometres east of the town and 3 kilometres west of Panormo. The beach takes its name from the namesake river that reaches the sea at its eastern end; the name is said to derive from "Ieros Potamos", the sacred river, which also gives its name to the whole province of Mylopotamos.
At its mouth the river forms a small lake beside the sea, a wetland, an area of the Natura 2000 network, that hosts birdlife, while falcons are reported to nest in the cavities of the surrounding rocks. West of the beach stands Kamara, a natural rock arch that can only be approached from the sea.
The shore is laid with pebbles and coarse sand, with shade from the rocks, and is not organized; there is a taverna and parking. Access is easy from the northern road axis.
