Lagouvardos, the surfers' beach

Lagouvardos is a large sandy beach near Marathopoli, on the Kyparissia Gulf of Messinia. It stretches for about two kilometres of sand, framed by rocks and pine forest, with a view of the small island of Proti.

It is one of the best known surfing beaches in Greece, with a seasonal school and equipment rental operating through the summer months. It also belongs to the shores of the Kyparissia Gulf where the caretta caretta sea turtle nests.

Access is by a paved road with parking nearby, and in season a canteen operates with umbrellas and sunbeds. Cafes and tavernas are close by, in Marathopoli, while the beach has no natural shade.
