Kalogria, in Zorba's footsteps

Kalogria unfolds at Stoupa, in the Messinian Mani, a beach of fine sand at the foot of Mount Taygetos. It is the best known and most organized shore of the area, where underground springs from the mountain reach the coastline.

Its name and story are tied to Nikos Kazantzakis, who lived and worked here around 1917 to 1919 during the mining operations of the region, alongside Giorgis Zorbas. That experience later gave rise to the novel 'Life and State of Alexis Zorbas'. A bust of the writer stands on the cliff above the beach, while at its southern end lies what is said to be the 'cave of Kazantzakis', where he would retreat to read and write.

The beach is fully organized in season, with a beach bar, cafes and tavernas, umbrellas and sunbeds, showers and WC. There is natural shade and parking nearby, and access is by a paved road.
