Oitylo: the bay with a history

Oitylo beach lies in the bay of the same name in East Mani, Lakonia, near Neo Oitylo and Karavostasi. It is a shore of pebbles and coarse sand, below the historic Maniot town.

Oitylo is built on a fortified hill that controlled the pass to Messenia and the gulf. In the age of piracy the place was remembered in tradition as the 'Great Algiers', after the markets of plunder held here. From Oitylo, in 1675-1676, began the well-known emigration of Maniots led by the Stefanopoulos family to Corsica, where their descendants later founded Cargese, with which Oitylo was twinned in 1990.

The beach is not fully organized, with seasonal service points. Nearby there are tavernas, cafes and parking, with natural shade in places. It is reached by a paved road, and the water is shallow.
