Sand lilies beneath the castle

Ambelakia stretches a few kilometres south of Monemvasia, on the Lakonia coast, with the great rock of the castle-town dominating the horizon. It is a beach of coarse sand and pebbles, where the view toward the fortress keeps you company as you swim.

The beach is known for the rare white sea lily (Pancratium maritimum), which flowers in summer across the dunes and lends the setting a distinctive touch. On quieter stretches of this part of the Lakonian coast, loggerhead sea turtles are said to lay their eggs in some years.

Access is by a paved road and there is parking nearby. You will find tavernas and cafes in the area, while seasonal facilities operate in places. There is also natural shade on parts of the beach.
