The cove below ancient Stagira
Sykia of Olympiada is a small cove in northeastern Halkidiki, next to the little harbour of Olympiada and directly below the hill of ancient Stagira. Its position, between the archaeological site and pines that come down to the sea, gives it a character quite unlike Halkidiki's big organized beaches.
Ancient Stagira, on the Liotopi peninsula beside the cove, was founded around 655 BC by colonists from Andros and is the birthplace of Aristotle. Olympiada, the village next door, was created in 1923 by refugees from Asia Minor and, by tradition, owes its name to Olympias, mother of Alexander the Great. The walk from the village to the beach passes right by the archaeological site.
The shore is coarse golden sand and remains without full organization, with showers and patches of natural shade. It can be reached on foot from Olympiada, with parking near the settlement, and part of the wider coast here is among the beaches awarded the Blue Flag.
