White sand by the old salt pan

Alykes lies on the western side of Ammouliani, the only inhabited island of Halkidiki, about a kilometer from the village. The crescent-shaped beach of white sand and shallow water took its name from the salt pan beside it, the small brackish lagoon from which islanders are said to have once gathered their year's supply of salt.

Ammouliani itself has an unusual history: until the early 20th century it is recorded as a dependency of the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos, and in the 1920s it was settled by refugees from the islands of the Propontis, who brought their seafaring and fishing traditions with them. The beach is reported to hold Blue Flag status.

The shore is partly organized, with seasonal beach bars and open free space, parking and a ramp for visitors with disabilities, while a campsite operates nearby. Access is by road across the island, after the ferry crossing from the mainland.
