The refugee village shore facing Mount Athos
Sarti beach spreads out in front of the village of the same name on eastern Sithonia in Halkidiki, a long ribbon of fine sand with Mount Athos rising across the Siggitikos Gulf. The name survives from ancient Sarte, a town mentioned by Herodotus in connection with the passage of Xerxes' fleet, and one tradition attributes it to a mythical king, Sartios.
The place has a layered history: in the 14th century the area is recorded as an estate of the Athonite monastery of Xiropotamou, while the village itself was built in 1922 by refugees from Afisia, an island in the Sea of Marmara in Asia Minor, and was first named Nea Afisia. This double heritage, Athonite and Asia Minor, gives the settlement its distinct character.
This is a large organized beach with shallow water and easy access by paved road and public transport. It offers seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas, beach bars, restaurants and cafes, showers and WC, water sports and parking nearby, along with free unorganized stretches.
