Twin coves below an ancient stronghold

Kastri lies south of Nikiti, on the northwestern coast of Sithonia in Halkidiki: two small sandy coves separated by a rock in the sea, at the edge of an area of holiday homes. It borrows its name from the neighbouring peninsula and the islet of Kastri, a few metres offshore.

The islet has been a declared archaeological site since 1973: research points to habitation from the Bronze Age through early Christian times, peaking in the Iron Age, and the site has been tentatively identified with an ancient city of the area, either Galepsos or Phiskelli. The place name is attributed to fortifications that once stood there, and it is said that in early Christian times the islet was joined to the mainland by a shallow passage.

The beach is unorganized, with no facilities at all, so you need to bring your own water and umbrella. The terrain mixes fine sand with rocks that lend themselves to snorkeling, the water is shallow near the shore, and access is by a paved road through the residential area.
