The monastic land facing Diaporos
Vourvourou spreads along the east coast of Sithonia in Halkidiki, between Ormos Panagias and Sarti, facing a cluster of islets of which Diaporos is the largest. Its name is thought to have medieval roots: in the 10th century the area is recorded as the land of the 'Vourvouroi' and was granted as a dependency to the Athonite monastery of Xenophontos.
Its history stayed tied to the monasteries of Athos: in 1615 the land was acquired by the people of Agios Nikolaos, while at the end of the 19th century monks of Simonopetra are said to have sold it to Russian monks, whom the locals drove away. On Diaporos, ruins of a pre-Byzantine church of Agios Andreas have been found, evidence that the area was inhabited from early times.
The beach is organized seasonally, with sunbeds, umbrellas and a beach bar, while cafes and tavernas are close by in the settlement. The sand shifts from fine to coarser, the water is shallow, and access is via a paved road, with parking nearby or along the roadside.
