The fishing-boat cove below Afytos

Varkes lies just north of Afytos, on the eastern coast of Kassandra in Halkidiki, a sandy cove at the foot of green slopes. The beach is said to have taken its name from the fishermen's boats (varkes) that have long anchored in the small bay.

Above it stands Afytos, the stone-built village set on a natural plateau over the sea. In antiquity this was the site of Aphytis, a city linked to the worship of Ammon Zeus, whose sanctuary has been excavated further south toward Kallithea, and the god's image is reported to have adorned the city's coins.

The beach is organized in sections, with seasonal sunbeds, umbrellas and a beach bar, and cafes and tavernas nearby. The sand is fine, the water is shallow, and access is by a paved road with parking close to the shore.
