The sandy shore of Greece's deepest natural harbor
Porto Koufo lies at the southern tip of Sithonia, at the head of a strikingly enclosed bay considered the largest and deepest natural harbor in Greece, about 1,600 metres long. The beach spreads out in front of the small fishing settlement, deep inside the bay, far from the narrow entrance framed by tall cliffs.
Its name has deep roots: as Kophos Limen, meaning the deaf harbor, it is mentioned as early as Thucydides in the 5th century BC, and tradition holds it was named this way because the sound of the open sea cannot be heard inside the enclosed bay. It is also reported that during the Second World War the bay was used by the Germans as a submarine base. To this day Porto Koufo remains a fishing harbor, known for its fish tavernas.
The beach is free and unorganized, with sand and coarse sand, while showers, toilets and changing rooms are available in the summer season. Access is by road down to the settlement, with parking nearby and tavernas in the village beside the shore.
