The sands of ancient Akanthos
Ierissos beach spreads out in front of the town of the same name in northeastern Halkidiki, at the gateway to the Athos peninsula, and is one of the longest sandy shores in the area.
Just outside the settlement stood ancient Akanthos, a colony founded by settlers from Andros in the 7th century BC that minted its own silver coins. Its ancient cemetery, one of the largest ever excavated in Greece with thousands of graves, extends along the coastal zone, while modern Ierissos was rebuilt closer to the sea after the devastating earthquake of 1932.
The beach is organized, with seasonal sunbeds, umbrellas and a beach bar, and has all the town's services beside it, from cafes to tavernas, along with parking. The sand shifts from fine to coarser, the water is shallow, and a section of the beach has been awarded a Blue Flag.
