An amphitheatre of sand facing the Drenia islets
Megali Ammos stretches along the southeastern coast of Ammouliani, the only inhabited island of Halkidiki, facing the Drenia islets. Its name simply describes what it is: one of the island's largest sandy beaches, with views toward Ouranoupoli and the Prosforio Tower.
The bay has an amphitheatric shape, and sculpted rocks emerge at its edges like natural sculptures. Ammouliani itself was a dependency (metochi) of the Vatopedi Monastery of Mount Athos until 1925, when it was granted to refugees from the islands of the Propontis, who became its first permanent inhabitants.
The beach has fine and coarser sand and shallow waters, with seasonal facilities. The island road reaches close to the shore, parking is available nearby, and a cafe and a taverna lie a short distance away.
