The twin shore at Sithonia's southernmost tip
Lemos sits at the southernmost end of Sithonia, beyond Porto Koufo, where the Halkidiki peninsula narrows before reaching its final cape. The place name describes the geometry of the spot exactly: a narrow strip of land, a 'laimos' or neck in Greek, with shore on both sides, like an hourglass with a low hill at its waist.
The feeling here is that of a frontier: behind you lies the body of Sithonia and ahead the Aegean opens up, and it is said that on very clear days the Sporades can be made out on the southern horizon. A little to the north, Porto Koufo, an old fishing village, is considered one of the largest natural harbours in Greece.
The beach is completely unorganized, with no facilities and no shade, fine sand alternating with rocks, and water that deepens quickly. Access is by a difficult dirt road with no clear signage from Porto Koufo, which keeps the place almost untouched.
