The cove named after its elm trees
Karagatsia lies on the northwest coast of Ammouliani, the only inhabited island of Halkidiki, about two kilometres from the village. The name is said to come from the karagatsia, as elm trees are called locally, the trees that grew around the cove.
The sandy shore unfolds below green hills, with golden sand both on land and on the seabed, in a landscape that still keeps much of the island's natural character. Ammouliani itself was until 1925 a metochi of the Vatopedi Monastery of Mount Athos and was then settled by refugees from the islands of the Propontis, a history that explains why the island remained a fishermen's place for decades before becoming a summer destination.
The beach has an organized section with sunbeds, umbrellas and a beach bar in the summer season, while much of the shore remains free. Access is by road to near the beach, with parking nearby, natural shade in places, and a cafe and taverna a short distance away.
