The dark clay-tinged sand of Ammouliani

Kalopigado lies on the west side of Ammouliani, the only inhabited island of Halkidiki, between Alikes and Karagatsia and a short distance from the port. Its name literally means 'good well' in Greek, and the beach stands out from its neighbours for its fine, dark sand.

This dark sand is reported to contain clay, which bathers spread on their skin and let dry before rinsing off in the sea, a small local custom of natural skin care. The island itself carries its own history: until the mid-1920s it was a dependency (metochi) of the Athonite monastery of Vatopedi, until refugees from the islands of the Propontis settled here and built the village as we know it.

It remains a free beach without full organization, with shallow water and parking close by on a local road that is paved almost to the shore.
