The white sculpted rocks outside Ierissos

Kakoudia lies a few kilometres outside Ierissos, in northeastern Halkidiki, on the gulf of Ierissos. Its landscape stands out across the whole area: white, smoothly worn rocks emerge from the sand and the sea like natural sculptures.

The shore, reported to run about a kilometre in length, has stayed outside tourist development and keeps a wild, almost lunar character. It is even said that scenes from Theo Angelopoulos's film Eternity and a Day, which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1998, were shot in this landscape. Neighbouring Ierissos is linked to ancient Akanthos, whose traces survive in the area.

The beach is entirely unorganized, with no facilities at all, so you need to bring your own water and umbrella. The rocky seabed makes it a known snorkeling spot, and access is by road from Ierissos.
