The shore beside Xerxes' canal

The beach of Nea Roda spreads out in front of the village of the same name, at the narrowest point of the Athos peninsula in Halkidiki. The village was founded in 1923 by refugees from Roda in the Propontis, who gave their new home the name of their old homeland.

The setting is among the most historic in Halkidiki: here, in the Provlakas zone, Herodotus records that Xerxes cut a canal nearly two kilometres long in the 5th century BC, so the Persian fleet could avoid sailing around Athos. Later geophysical surveys are reported to have confirmed the canal's location and course, and it is considered one of the greatest technical works of antiquity in the Greek lands.

The beach has infrastructure for people with mobility difficulties: a ramp and walkway leading to the sea, an accessible toilet and a changing room. Beyond that, the shore is not organized.
