The rocky cove down a hundred steps

KAPE beach lies on the southern coast of Lavreotiki, between Charakas and Legrena, a few minutes before Sounio. Its unusual name is an acronym: the shore belongs to the grounds of the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources (KAPE in Greek), and the institute's roadside sign became the name bathers know it by.

The scenery is among the most rugged on the Attica coastline: narrow strips of pebble and coarse sand beneath rocky slopes, with low Mediterranean scrub all around and a view out to the islet of Patroklos. Despite the fame it has gained in recent years, the shore remains unbuilt and keeps its natural character.

The road is paved as far as the parking area above the shore; from there the descent is by steps and a short path that needs care. The beach is unorganized, with no facilities on the sand itself, though a small kiosk or canteen operates seasonally above the steps. The water is deep close to shore.
