The long sands facing Patroklos islet

Charakas beach lies on the southern coast of Lavreotiki in East Attica, a few kilometres before Sounio, in front of the seaside settlement of the same name. It is one of the longest stretches of sand on the Attica coastline, looking straight out to the green islet of Patroklos in the Saronic Gulf.

The wider Lavreotiki area carries a deep mining history, from the ancient silver mines that funded classical Athens at its height. The islet of Patroklos opposite is said to take its name from Patroklos, an admiral of the fleet of Ptolemy II, who camped and fortified his position there in the 3rd century BC, during the Chremonidean War. At the eastern side of the beach stand machine-gun pillboxes from the wartime Occupation, which are said to have later served even as dwellings.

The road is paved almost to the beach, with parking beside the shore or along the roadside. The sands mix fine and coarser grain, with organized and semi-organized sections and seasonal cafes and beach bars. Natural shade is limited, so an umbrella is essential.
