The shore of the ancient temple of Artemis

Artemida beach stretches for a great length along the eastern coast of Attica, in front of the town older Athenians still call Loutsa. The settlement was officially renamed Artemida in 1981, while the old name is said to derive from an Arvanite word for a wet, marshy place, a memory of the wetlands that once reached the shore.

The new name is no accident: right on the beach survive the foundations of the temple of Artemis Tauropolos, a Doric temple of the classical period, on the site of the ancient deme of Halai Araphenides. According to the tradition recorded by Euripides in Iphigenia in Tauris, the sanctuary was founded by Orestes, who brought the goddess's wooden statue from Tauris, and the Tauropolia festival with its night-time processions was held here.

Access is by paved road and there is parking. The shore has fine and coarser sand, with organized sections offering sunbeds and umbrellas, a beach bar and cafes, while showers, WC and lifeguard cover operate seasonally. Natural shade is limited, so an umbrella is needed.
