The beach with the sunken ancient settlement
Pounta Zeza lies on the Lavreotiki coast just outside Lavrio, a crescent of sand beneath a low seaside hill. Despite being so close to town, the landscape keeps something of the bare, mining-country character of southeastern Attica.
On the hill above the beach stretched an ancient coastal settlement, which researchers identify with the "Porthmos of the Salaminioi", known from inscriptions of the 4th century BC. As the sea level has risen from antiquity to our own times, part of the remains ended up underwater, right in front of the sands, beside a region where the ancient silver mines of Lavrio made history.
The road is paved almost to the shore and there is parking. The beach is not organized, but a canteen and cafe operate, while camping and organized facilities can be found nearby. There is natural shade in places from trees and slopes, and the beach is listed in the Greek Blue Flag programme directory.
