The black rock between Saronida and Anavyssos

Mavro Lithari stretches along the Athens-Sounio coastal avenue between Saronida and Anavyssos, about forty kilometres from central Athens. It owes its name, meaning "black stone", to the imposing dark rock that stands out on the shore and has become the beach's landmark.

The coast has a cosmopolitan character, with fine sand and small pebbles in and out of the water, and faces west toward the Saronic Gulf, with views reaching as far as Aegina. The beach is reported to have a long record of Blue Flag awards, and in the late afternoon many gather on the pier to watch the sun set behind the island.

It is fully organised in the summer months, with seasonal umbrellas and sunbeds, a beach bar, snack bar and restaurant, as well as sea sports. Access is by paved road with parking nearby, and the water deepens fairly quickly.
