The little steps down to a turquoise cove

Skales Altheas lies in the small settlement of Althea at Agia Marina, on the Athens to Sounio coastal road in Attica, around its 35th kilometre. The spot owes its name to the little steps leading down from the road to the shore, which is why many know it simply as 'Skalakia', the little steps.

It is a small cove of pebbles and rock slabs squeezed between low rocks on the Saronic coast. Its waters are often mentioned in the Athenian press for a turquoise colour said to recall the Ionian islands rather than Attica, while the wider settlement of Agia Marina takes its name from the chapel of Agia Marina near the shore.

The beach is free, without full organization: access is a short descent on foot from the road, where cars park along the roadside. The terrain is rocks and pebbles with natural shade in places, and the water gets deep fairly quickly. Cafes and tavernas are reported in the surrounding area of Agia Marina.
