The chapel at the edge of the bay
Agios Spyridonas beach sits in Porto Rafti, East Attica, at the northern tip of the bay, where the coastal Leoforos Gregou ends. It takes its name from the chapel of Agios Spyridonas beside the shore and is one of the bay's best-known free sandy beaches.
The chapel is a single-nave, vaulted, tile-roofed church of the post-Byzantine era. Tradition holds it was raised in the late eighteenth century on the ruins of an older church, and its feast is celebrated on 12 December. Porto Rafti bay itself is said to owe its name to the marble statue on the islet of Raftis, which reminded sailors of a seated tailor, a "raftis".
The shore has fine and coarse sand, shallow water and natural shade in places from trees and slopes. Seasonal cafes operate here, while the paved road reaches close to the beach and parking is available.
