The sandy shore below ancient Vravrona
Hamolia lies on the eastern coast of Attica, in front of the seaside settlement of the same name at Vravrona, about four kilometres north of Porto Rafti. Its sandy shore faces northeast toward the Aegean and sits roughly forty-five kilometres from central Athens, which has made it one of the Mesogaia's well-known spots for a quick escape from the city.
The place has deep roots: right beside it spreads the archaeological site of Vravrona with the sanctuary of Artemis, one of the most important sanctuaries of ancient Attica, where, according to the tradition passed down by Euripides, Iphigenia ended her journey as a priestess of the goddess. On the Chamolia hill itself a fortified acropolis of the Bronze Age is reported to have stood, with a Mycenaean cemetery at its foot, while the Early Christian basilica of Vravrona survives near the beach.
The beach remains free and without full organisation, with sand and natural shade in places. Access is reported to be particularly easy from the road beyond Porto Rafti, though the surface of the final stretch is unconfirmed.
