The old harbour town facing Eretria
The beach of Skala Oropou spreads in front of the settlement of the same name in northeastern Attica, where the South Euboean Gulf narrows opposite Eretria. On this spot stood the harbour of ancient Oropos, of particular importance for communication between Attica and Evia.
The link with the opposite shore was never lost: the Skala Oropou to Eretria ferry runs to this day. In the early 20th century Skala was a summer retreat for the inhabitants of the mountain villages of Oropos, while large tracts of it belonged to the national benefactor Andreas Syngros, in whose honour the church of Agios Andreas near the sea was named. Near the settlement also lies the Oropos lagoon, a wetland where flamingos and herons are reported.
The shore in front of the settlement is laid with pebbles and has no recorded organization. According to the official seatrac.gr directory, it is among the Greek beaches equipped with a Seatrac device for swimmers with mobility difficulties.
